Find the Right Visa Category

The U.S. immigration system offers many visa categories. Finding the right one depends on your purpose, qualifications, and circumstances.

Work-Based Visas

H-1B: Specialty occupation workers with a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Annual cap of 65,000 + 20,000 for advanced degrees.

L-1: Intracompany transferees (managers, executives, specialized knowledge workers) moving to a U.S. office.

O-1: Individuals with extraordinary ability in sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics.

E-2: Treaty investors who invest a substantial amount in a U.S. business (country must have a treaty with the U.S.).

Family-Based Visas

Immediate relatives: Spouses, parents, and unmarried children under 21 of U.S. citizens (no annual cap).

Preference categories: Other family relationships with annual numerical limits and potentially long wait times.

Student Visas

F-1: Academic students at approved schools, colleges, and universities.

M-1: Students at vocational or non-academic institutions.

Other Categories

K-1: Fiancé(e) of a U.S. citizen (must marry within 90 days of entry).

U visa: Victims of certain crimes who assist law enforcement.

T visa: Victims of human trafficking.
